So here is a VERY INTERESTING interview with Jane Friedman & Larry Kirshbaum. I finally got to watch the whole thing and there is some great stuff in here. It’s definitely worth a watch. Some interesting things:
- Publishing as an industry is old and very resistant to change.
- The process of making a book takes WAY TOO LONG.
- Jane is not optimistic that the big publishers will survive. Larry thinks they’ll be ok because of their distribution channel power (see our post on Book Producers – we talk about this)
- The overhead will kill the big publishers (more freelancers = more variable cost = more need for Appingo
) - Big author advances can’t survive
- There are more self-published books now than professionally published books
- The smaller, more entrepreneurial companies will define this industry going forward.
- And much more…
